Thinking of art as an adventure
In my daily activity and in my teaching job I have to cope with images.
By painting I create images and as an artist I communicate through them. It’s not easy to understand why an image touches you and another one doesn’t. Even when an image seems to clearly represent something, that’s not the deep reason why we love it. It’s not a matter of meaning, even in figurative art, even when the significance is evident: painting consists of tones, timbers, composition, harmony, contrasts and other things…
It’s a world apart with its own rules, sometimes mysterious. Like music.
Sometimes rules arise inside the work itself, whether it’s a drawing, watercolour or whatsoever and at that moment an intuition, a twist, even a mistake may establish a new language, new rules for a surprising coherence, for an unprecedented balance.
During my courses I try to involve my students in analyzing our drawings, drafts, watercolours, cards… whatever comes out of our explorations in the world of images. It’s so intriguing to find out what makes a visual idea work, even just a pencil mark.
Sometimes we… just reinvent the wheel, observing measures which belong to the history of human art and other times some of us has an original intuition and even the tiniest one may open new paths for us to explore.
Those who ever tried to create images may understand: even a doodle may become an exciting adventure.
